How to improve the frequency stability of microwave signals

At the end of last month researchers at the National Institute of Standards andTechnology (NIST) have developed microwave signals with a frequency instability of 10-18. The frequency stability of the microwave signal is 100 times higher than that of the most accurate microwave oscillation source today. This research indicates the leapfrog development of electronics technology.

Ultra-stable electrical signals have many application prospects, including the ability to calibrate electronic clocks and make wireless communication systems more stable and reliable. In the future the research results will provide reference for the redefinition of seconds and the formulation of newtime standards. In addition, the light-derived microwave signals of this technology can also make the imaging systems more sensitive. And in aspects of astronomical imaging and geodesy surveying the use of these signals to remotely calibrate receivers distributed around the world is able to move the detection network from the earth to space. As a result, it will not only improve the image resolution, but also avoid the in convenience of observation caused by atmospheric distortion.
